Super Mario RPG!

Posted by TheJonnyDeath - January 10th, 2012

My latest and greatest creation has now hit the internet, and while it is too large for Newgrounds, you can enjoy it right here on my NG home page.

Also, for a tracklist with time links on it, view it on my Youtube channel.

Sit back and enjoy a 37 minute rock tribute to one of the best VG soundtracks of all time: Super Mario RPG.

My user name comes from this game -- it's kind of a big deal to me.

I'm only a few minutes in thus far but I'm really liking your interpretation of things and know I'll probably end up listening to this time and time again. You easily did the OST justice and I dare say that stumbling upon this made my day. Thanks a bunch for making this and sharing.

And holy crap this just keeps getting better as it goes on. Seriously, awesome job.

Man. I have to say I'm really impressed by your work. I really wish you'd take a crack at either covering or expanding upon the NEStalgia soundtrack. Game needs some new music for the next patch for serious.

5 comments already, damn...i hoped that i'd be the first one...well, the good news are that last time i watched the video, now i will just listen through the songs again just because they're great

and i almost forgot, starting from around 13:54 it's my favorite song from the ones here ;)

This is a blast of enhanced memories thrilling all over my body. I've been following your art for now 2 years and this is a Master Piece. 15/10!

I wish you did the Paper Mario tracklist on YouTube.

I wish you did the Paper Mario tracklist on YouTube.

I can sum up my initial reaction to this video in one word: APPLAUSE.

I grew up with this game, and I always thought the music was killer; the first time I watched the video, I was convulsing with happy, awesome-nostalgia-induced jitters by the two-minute mark. The remixes are incredible and very well-composed, the transitions work excellently, and the footage used in the video fits PERFECTLY with the tone of each track (extra super bonus points for using YOUR OWN GAMEPLAY FOOTAGE; that blew me away). What really threw me for a loop was some of the slower and more ambient music included in the medley; hearing your renditions of those pieces helped me hear those tracks in a way I had never considered possible, and that doesn't happen to me very often, so that's saying something.

Congratulations on a job very well done; this is a musical masterpiece I won't soon forget.

Ok man, here is my review... I've always liked your idea of making videgame music like metal, and this is your big fish... It is great to think about the time you spent on it, and you took a really awesome work. You told us the whole Mario RPG story en 37 minutes and brought some nostalgia and good memories... Your arragements are good, I simply love how you play the guitar, you're talented at it... But I still don't like at all your keyboards arrangements... I think you don't manage them so good at all, and you lost some epic moments, maybe you could help some parts with powerful strings, flutes, whatever... You gotta learn a little more about symphonic sounds...

In other topic, speaking about the song selection... You missed my beloved Kero Sewers track, the underworld where Belome appears... I think you missed a really important part of the game. I was waiting the whole remix for it to appear... But I never heard it upon your style. That made me so sad.
And next, I think you lacked in giving some parts the correct feeling... Example: The first Smithy battle theme... I think you lacked in strenght there. The Smithy battle is the last moment!! Is the climax of the game, and it seemed to me if like you were playing that part some kind of bored, or I sense you didn't have the inspiration enough or something like that. I really excpected much more from the Smithy Battle... As well, I liked so much your Bowser's Keep arrangement, but I think it was actually too short. Bowser's Keep is the part where one of the greatest issues is solved, and the feeling of Bowser getting back to it's castle, to rescue it is very important and you just passed through it too quick. And in some parts you must give the song a slow beat, you gave it fast.. Sometimes the feelings in the video weren't very well with music. For example, the first ending theme, you played it very fast! And you made me lost the real feeling of "pfff, Geno is finally leaving waaaa!!!"... Do you get me?... The strenght you missed at Smithy Battle, is the strenght you put in that ending.

But well, please, don't misunderstand me. I'm not telling in anyway you made a bad work. Actually, it is excellent!... I thought nobody never would do a Super Mario RPG tribute, and you got it! It was really a masterpiece... I just wanted to give my honest opinion. You're a great musican Johnny. Keep the good work.
